A New York City man has been ordered by a federal judge to pay $1.7 million in a mail-order scheme he accused of funneling more than $1 billion through his Internet pharmacies and websites, the National Journal reports. In a letter to the New York Supreme Court, New York attorney Steve Mierzyn told the Journal that the allegations are unfounded. He said he was still taking the allegations to trial. "He is not in any way aware of the allegations," Mierzyn said. "He is still taking them to trial," he said. He said he has not yet spoken to the New York government about the allegations, and that the investigation is continuing.
Mierzyn said he has not yet spoken to his partner, who was in court on April 10, but that he is still accepting payments from the federal government to cover the cost of the case.
Mierzyn, who has served the federal government more than 12 years, said he has a job offer to attend a hearing at the Justice Department for a new federal judge this year. He will be scheduled for a hearing on July 18, when the U. S. Supreme Court on April 23.
"This is not a decision for me," Mierzyn said.
Mierzyn, who also has been accused of a number of business transactions, said he was aware of the allegations. He said he has never taken a charge against the state of Washington.
"If I was going to be out of my home, there would be other things going on," Mierzyn said. "But this is not a decision for me."
According to the New York Times, in a letter dated May 14, Mierzyn said the charges were "disputed." The federal government will pay up to $50 million in penalties. "I am satisfied with his actions," Mierzyn said.
The New York City Attorney's Office said in a statement, "this case will be a landmark moment for all victims of sexual misconduct." Mierzyn said the federal government is taking steps to ensure the investigation continues and that the investigation will not be ending without his supervision.
